The first day of the Easter holidays arrived and threw a spanner in the works for my training, the usual ‘free’ time to train in the afternoons vanished due to the kids being off school. I’m sure this situation may resonate with you.
My initial reaction was “It’s ok, I will take a day off and get back on it tomorrow.” However, as the day went on, I felt that this was just an excuse, I wanted to train and there was really no reason why I couldn’t fit in a bit of training.
My plan of attack was to sneak in short 5 minute blocks, throughout the day. I downloaded the free app “IntervalTimer” to my phone set aside a space in the dining room and I was good to go.
I set the timer for 5 minutes with 30 second intervals – 30 seconds of work / 30 seconds of rest, I picked some bodyweight exercises – Squat Thrusts, Squats, Jump Squats, Press Ups, Hill Climbs and L Sit Holds. I completed these 6 blocks of work over a period of around 3 hours while dealing with the kids, dinners, dogs and some housework.
Although, the fitness guru will say this isn’t ‘optimal’, but by sneaking some blocks of exercise in I managed to get some work done. Although this wasn’t the ‘ideal’ workout or ‘perfect’, it was still better than not training at all.
Sometimes situations won’t be perfect but its still important to do the work. Opportunity is everywhere if you are committed to doing the work.
The next time you think “I don’t have time to get to the gym”, find a space at home and 5 minutes and go to work. If you find another 5 minutes later, do some more work. You will be surprised how much you can get done by ‘greasing the grove’ throughout the day.
Everyone has 5 minutes. Make them count.
