As a society, generally we live a comfortable existence compared to other generations and other parts of the world.
I’m aware most people have stuff going on in life.
If you’re reading this on a smart phone, things could probably be worse.
Modern life is convenient and we are not exposed to discomfort, which would appear to be advantageous to us as individuals.
However, this can leads to issues.
It doesn’t prepare us for the unexpected difficult moments in life – that always arrive.
Doing hard things through choice can help us mentally during the difficult times life throws at us.
It also makes us less fragile at dealing with small trivial things in today’s society.
Manufacturing struggle and suffering might be the last thing people want to do, but it will help you deal with setbacks in life.
You don’t have to go full David Goggins,l but being aware of that uncomfortable thing you know you should be, but don’t is usually a sign you should do it.
Tough training sessions, learning new skills, climbing a mountain, cold showers, for some it may just be going for a walk, getting to the gym or not eating chocolate for breakfast – it will differ with each individual.
It doesn’t have to be anything crazy – but exposure to chosen discomfort is beneficial.
You will know what is ‘hard’ to you, and what you should be doing.
There’s a saying that goes along the lines of “prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child”
And I believe this to be true for all humans of all ages.
The easier we make life for ourselves in the moment, the harder it will be in the long term.
The inverse is also true.
Seek discomfort.
