Harder to Kill……

A few weeks ago as part of the application process for the Built Lean Programme was to ask what your goals were, one of the options I had was ‘To become harder to kill’……. at first I put this in for a bit of banter but after thinking about it and chatting to some of the guys it made total sense.
Becoming harder to kill isn’t about being some ninja super hero that can save the world against the zombie apocalypse.
It’s about focusing on being healthy and being able to take care of business if the situation ever arises.
How many serious diseases are a direct result of being overweight and living a poor lifestyle? How many people, of all ages, do you know struggle with joint pain? How many people do you know that wouldn’t be able to run half a mile if there was an emergency, or have to lift something heavy, drag something or climb over something?
Even if we scale it back a bit and look at every day life, ask yourself – is your lack or health, mobility, strength and fitness levels allowing you to enjoy life to the fullest?
Are you fit enough to play with the kids or grandchildren?

Is your poor food and lifestyle choices making you ill and lethargic?

As you get older, are you going to have the stability and mobility to prevent a fall, and if not are you fit enough to recover properly?

This may seem irrelevant to you at the moment, but years or inactivity and a poor lifestyle will catch up with you quicker than you realise, the good thing is that you can take action today, right now.  You don’t need to wait.
Over the past few years my training, and sessions I deliver to the guys focuses on being generally healthier, fitter and stronger. We will never be the strongest about, never be the leanest, never be the quickest to run a half marathon but I know for a fact we all have a focus on eating well, moving better, developing strength and conditioning. The guys are ‘fit’ enough to enjoy their life and can take care of business should they situation arise.

Its great to have a specific goal, that maybe low level body fat, a specific marathon time or a Deadlift PB – however your health should always be a priority.

Having a 6 pack is cool but looking after you and your family for the rest of your life is cooler.
I am fortunate enough to have trained some awesome people over the past few years and have been applying the Built Lean system with great effect.

A typical training session will involve some mobility work, focusing on areas that are a priority to you.

From here, we look at building strength and use exercises that suits the individual, compound lifts such as Squats, Bench Press and Deadlift.  We blend these with some more volume based lifts – higher reps to help with adding some muscle.

We then usually finish with some core, conditioning and Grip work and sometimes integrate all 3 with what we call ‘finishers’.  For example, we may combine farmers walks with sprints and hanging knee raises or Burpees with Kettlebell swings.

Over the past few years I have found this type of training to produce great results with our male clients, producing great transformations – with their health, appearance and performance.

Here is a sample of one of our workouts from the latest Built Lean Programme.

Becoming Harder to Kill is really about becoming a solid all rounder. Healthy, Moves Well, Lean & Muscular and has a good level of Cardiovascular Fitness.  Unless you have a specific goal, this training system will be beneficial for the ‘normal’ man looking to get healthier and in shape.

BECOMING HARDER TO KILL should always be the goal!
